I made my first game download purchase on Amazon.com recently and was initially confronted with a message saying that game downloads are only available to U.S. customers. Luckily, I already had a U.S. address attached to my Amazon account so all I had to do was to make that one my primary address.
If you are confronted with this situation, here’s what you have to do.
Register with VIAddress.com. They are a U.S. parcel forwarding service which provide you with a valid U.S. address.. FOR FREE. There customer care and PR is a bit on and off so I won’t advice using it for actual parcel forwarding. But you can add this address to Amazon.com and make it your primary address in order to buy game downloads.
If there’s a problem (Only read this if the above step is not sufficient)
I’m not sure whether you have to validate the address by having something delivered to it. I already had made purchases to my address. If this is the case, you could simply buy something small and cheap and have it sent to the address given to you by VIAddress. That should definitely work since the guys at VIAddress accept any delivery and you now have a solid U.S. address.

Amazon entered the digital game distribution market with an extensive list of casual titles in the bag. It has recently introduced more than 500 core titles including most of the AAA one’s you’re ever going to need. Another trend that has emerged are huge discounts on great titles, the likes of which Steam is famous for. With these improvements, amazon is slowly starting to nudge it’s way in to the digital game download market dominated by Steam, D2D and GamersGate.
Michael Anderson has written a post titled “Amazon TOTALLY Gets This ‘Digital Game Sale’ Thing … MacGameStore, Not So Much!” regarding this phenomenon which is quite interesting. Here’s an excerpt:

I have largely ignored Amazon’s digital download shop in my weekly round-ups, and with good reasons: they have offered marginal deals on marginal games and really weren’t bringing anything new to the game … until recently. This fall Amazon started stepping things up, and now for the new year they are standing toe-to-toe with Steam and Direct2Drive and GamersGate … at least in terms of hosting huge sales. There are a number of games I plan to buy from them this week, which will be the first non-casual stuff I’ve gotten from Amazon. Fortunately, it IS Amazon, so I have no reservations about buying from them!
